Threat Level: 🔴 High
Threat Type: Social Engineering / Malware
What’s Happening
Cybersecurity researchers are warning about a growing attack method where hackers impersonate coworkers or IT staff and invite victims to fake Zoom or Microsoft Teams meetings. During the call, the attacker convinces the victim to install a “required update,” troubleshooting tool, or meeting plugin.
Instead of installing legitimate software, the victim actually installs malware that allows attackers to access their computer remotely. In many cases, criminals use screen-sharing tools or remote-access software to gain full control of the system.
Because the interaction occurs through a real-time video call, the scam can appear convincing and may bypass traditional phishing detection tools.
Why This Matters
If attackers gain access to a computer through this method, they may be able to:
• Install spyware or remote-access malware
• Steal passwords and login credentials
• Access sensitive business documents
• Launch additional attacks inside a company network
Security experts say these attacks are increasing because live conversations make social engineering more persuasive than email-based phishing.
How to Stay Safe
• Be cautious of unexpected meeting invitations from unknown contacts
• Never install software during a call unless you initiated the request
• Verify IT support requests through official channels
• Avoid granting remote access to someone you cannot confirm
Bottom Line
Cybercriminals are increasingly using live calls and fake meetings to trick victims into installing malware themselves. Always verify unexpected support or meeting requests before taking action.
